This funding from Historic England supports urgent repairs and essential improvements to listed places of worship in England.
Grants ranging from £10,000 to £1,000,000 will be awarded for capital works that keep buildings safe, open and in public use.
Any listed place of worship in England can apply, of any faith or denomination, provided it is an active place of worship.
Priority will be given to projects in areas of England with the greatest need for investment, and those that bring most community benefit.
The fund is divided into three streams of small, medium and large grants, as below:
- £10,000 to £50,000
- £50,001 to £350,000
- £350,001 to £1,000,000.
Projects must match one or more of Historic England’s priorities, which are to:
- Help more people to connect with, enjoy and benefit from the historic environment
- Use heritage to improve civic pride, prosperity, and wellbeing
- Achieve a positive change and sustainable future for historic places, including buildings, landscapes, archaeological sites, and marine assets
- Ensure heritage plays an important role in the fight to limit and manage the effects of climate change.the type of repair, conservation, and conversion activities we will consider
The type of repair, conservation, and conversion activities which will be considered are capital works, minor repairs, improvements and alterations, project development, adaptive reuse, and heritage interpretation.
The second funding round of 2026 is due to open for Expressions of Interest on 10 September 2026.
